Top Seam Types Every Fashion Designer Should Know

Did you know?… most of us only use 23% of the seams that exist. And on top of that, we don’t know more than 40% of the available options.

For the last four years, one of my responsibilities at ABC Seams is to analyze seams: how they are made and what machines are involved in the process, their uses and properties, their cost, etc.
This seems very basic -and even boring!-. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The number of seams variations would surprise you. But above all, you would understand how enriching it is to know about this when designing.

This article is the first one of a series where we’ll reveal the secret world of the sewing seams.

Knowing the types of seams is key to obtaining the best aesthetic and functional results.

Classification

First of all, we’ll study how seams are classified.
According to their main function, we have 3 categories:

  1. Constructions
  2. Finishes
  3. Details

Properties

Then, we’ll analyze the properties of each group.
Depending mainly on the seam structure, the fabric, and the type of stitch/stitching, the main properties are:

  • resistance to external forces
  • durability regarding use and tear
  • versatility to different fabrics
  • flexibility to adapt to different shapes
  • elasticity and stretch recovery
  • manufacturing cost (or time)

Uses

Finally, we will see the most frequent uses:

  • type of products and styles
  • placement (in which parts of the garment or product)
  • most suitable types of fabrics
  • types of fabric cut

This information will not only boost your career, but it’ll also allow you to make better decisions and save time in the development stage.
Stay tuned, don’t miss what is coming.

Cheers,
Belu
