Topstitching: Types, Purposes and Uses

A Practical Guide to Naming, Choosing and Specifying Topstitches

“Topstitch, edgestitch, understitch, stitch-in-the-ditch: four words designers use loosely, and four different operations a factory will sew exactly as labelled. Mixing them up isn’t a small thing. It’s a sample that comes back wrong and a week added to your calendar.”

To be clear: a topstitch is a visible stitch, a line of stitching you can see on the front of the fabric. So, if you see it on the outside of the garment, it’s a topstitch. If you’ve ever hesitated when explaining or naming it in your designs, keep reading.

By the end of this article, you’ll be able to choose, name and specify any topstitch with confidence, so you never second-guess that detail on a tech pack again.

What a Topstitch Actually Does

A topstitch is rarely just decoration. On a tech pack, it gives important details: it shows the factory where the seam is reinforced, where bulk is controlled, and where two or more layers are meant to stay put. The same line of stitching can serve both a practical and a visual purpose, which is why it’s important to specify it carefully.

If you are unclear, you’ll get prototypes back with the wrong number of stitch lines, the wrong distance from the edge, or no topstitch at all. And each of those adjustments means ordering new samples and checking again (more work for everyone).

Give exact details, like how many stitch lines and how far from the seam, and the prototype will be right the first time.

Topstitch Classification

Topstitches vary along two axes:

  • Number of Topstitch Lines: usually one, two, or three parallel rows.
  • Topstitch Position: distance to the seam line/edge.

Those two variables are the key to specifying a seam in a tech pack: always consider both the number of stitch lines and their distance from the seam or edge (and between them if needed).

Clear details prevent mistakes and ensure the factory makes what you want.

Topstitch Types

#0 Seam without topstitch. The cleanest look and the most flexible, but also the least resistant. Used where appearance and drape matter more than strength.

Note: understitching and stitch-in-the-ditch are often discussed alongside topstitching, but they aren’t topstitches. Understitching is hidden inside the garment to stop a facing or lining rolling to the front; stitch-in-the-ditch hides in the seam groove. They’re worth knowing, but don’t class them as topstitches.

#1 Single topstitch. One visible line. Essential for any garment construction: hems, edges, and decorative seams.

#2 Double topstitch. Two parallel lines. Stronger and more noticeable. Used for jeans, t-shirt hems, and pockets.

#3 Triple topstitch. Three parallel lines. Maximum reinforcement and a strong visual statement, used on heavyweight fabrics, bulky seams, bags, upholstery, jeans, and outerwear.

Topstitch with flap. The flap adds a decorative element. Most common on plackets and patch pockets of high-end garments.

Off-seam topstitch. Placed away from the seam line, such as wide or faced hems. Always specify the distance in the construction sheet of your tech pack.

Purposes and Uses

From curtains, footwear, and upholstery to plackets, cuffs, and pockets, topstitching does five jobs:

  1. Strengthen the seam and hold its shape. It secures areas prone to tension and stress, such as crotches and necklines.
  2. Stop fraying. Where the seam allowance isn’t neat, a basic or double topstitch keeps the fabric from fraying, as in lined garments.
  3. Reduce bulk and stabilise the seam allowance. It helps the seam lie flat. Ideal on heavyweight fabrics, where it cuts the thickness of the allowance underneath.
  4. Decorate and define. It highlights the structure of the garment and makes seam lines stand out, especially in a contrast thread.
  5. Hold two or more layers together. Usually stitch-in-the-ditch or off-edge topstitches. On padded coats the topstitch looks decorative, but its real job is stabilising the padding and holding it to the fabric. The same logic applies to bags, shoes, and upholstery.

Standard Measures

Distance from the seam line is where most tech-pack confusion starts. These are the common industrial conventions:

Getting Clean Topstitching

Choosing the right topstitch is just the start, and making it look good is just as important. Use these four settings for best results (and specify them in your tech pack):

  • Stitch length: Slightly longer stitches (3–3.5 mm, up to 4 mm for heavy fabrics) look cleaner and are easier to keep straight.
  • Thread: Use heavier topstitch thread (like 30 wt) for a sharp line. Regular 50 wt in the bobbin avoids tension issues. Always note the thread in the BOM.
  • Keeping it straight and pucker-free: Some comments that might be worth adding to tech packs are: guide fabric with the presser foot or edge-stitch foot; sew parallel rows in the same direction, lower top tension for delicate fabrics, and use a stabiliser when needed. For corners, stop with the needle down and pivot.
  • Needle: The wrong needle can skip stitches. Use a topstitch needle with a larger eye, appropriate for your thread and fabric.

Why getting topstitching right matters

  • Precision in execution. Naming the topstitch type and distance avoids guesswork.
  • Cleaner factory communication. A precise topstitch travels through tech packs and vendors without being re-explained.
  • Fewer sampling rounds. Right-first-time samples save time and cost on every style.
  • Design confidence. When you can name and specify any design, you stop avoiding the detail and start using it on purpose.

The Most Common Mistake

A costly error happens when the drawing and written instructions for a topstitch do not match. For example, the sketch shows a single topstitch, but the note says double, or the placement looks different in each.

When this happens, the factory has to choose, and more than 70% of the time they build what they see in the flat, not what the text says, leading to further rework, inconsistencies, and confusions.

To avoid this, always make sure your sketches and instructions match. Update both if you make any changes. This simple step prevents errors and saves time.

FAQs (Frequently asked questions)

Every topstitch is a stitch, but not every stitch is a topstitch. A topstitch is specifically an exposed stitch: a line worked from the right side so it stays visible on the face of the garment. A plain construction stitch, by contrast, is usually hidden inside the seam.

No, though they’re related. Edgestitching is simply a topstitch placed very close to the seam or fold, about 1–2 mm.

A little longer than a construction seam reads as cleaner and more deliberate. Specify it in the tech pack rather than leaving it to the manufacturer.

For a defined line, use a heavier topstitch thread (for example 30 wt) on top and keep regular 50 wt thread in the bobbin to avoid tension issues. If you want a stronger visual, a thicker thread or two threads through a single needle exaggerates the line. Always note the thread reference and colour in the BOM.

A special topstitch needle (90/14 or 100/16) has a larger eye and a rounded-sharp point that carries heavier thread cleanly. Match the size to the thread and fabric weight; the wrong needle is a frequent cause of skipped stitches on a visible line.

It depends on the type. Edge stitching sits at 1–2 mm; a basic single topstitch typically runs 7–12 mm from the seam or edge. Double rows are usually about 6 mm apart, and an off-seam topstitch must state an exact distance because it isn’t anchored to the seam.

Lower the top tension slightly, add a stabiliser on lightweight fabrics, use a sharp topstitch needle, and sew parallel rows in the same direction. On layered or stretchy fabrics a walking foot helps the layers feed evenly. Pressing won’t hide a pucker that started as a tension or feed problem.

Guide the fabric off a fixed reference rather than watching the needle: the edge of the presser foot, an edge-stitch foot with a centre blade, a quarter-inch foot, or a seam guide on the bed of the machine. Shifting the needle position lets you fine-tune the distance while keeping the foot against the edge.

At a corner, stop with the needle down, lift the presser foot, pivot the fabric, then lower the foot and continue, so the line stays continuous. On curves, slow down and shorten the stitch slightly, guiding the fabric gently without pushing or pulling, which keeps the curve smooth and avoids distortion.

Both are valid; it’s a design decision. Tonal (matching) thread keeps a topstitch discreet when its job is mainly structural. Contrast thread, such as gold on denim, turns the same line into a feature. Whichever you choose, specify it clearly so the factory doesn’t default to the wrong one.

State four things: the number of lines, the distance from the seam or edge, the stitch length, and the thread. Better still, reference the ASCS code for the seam so the topstitch is defined once and reads the same to every vendor, instead of being described in a sentence each factory might interpret differently.

Specs, Tools and Tech-Pack Terms

  • Stitch length: the distance between needle penetrations, in mm (or stitches per inch).
  • SPCM (stitches per centimeter): the metric way to express stitch density; about 3 stitches per cm suits most topstitching (the metric equivalent of SPI).
  • SPI (stitches per inch): a way to express stitch density; about 7–8 SPI suits most topstitching.
  • Topstitch thread: a heavier thread (e.g. 30 wt) used on top for a defined line; regular 50 wt goes in the bobbin.
  • Topstitch needle: a needle with a larger eye and rounded-sharp point (90/14, 100/16) made for heavier topstitch thread.
  • Needle gauge: the fixed distance between the two needles of a twin/double setup, e.g. 6.4 mm on jeans.
  • Seam allowance: the fabric between the seam line and the raw edge; topstitching often secures it underneath.
  • BOM (Bill of Materials): the tech-pack list of materials, including the topstitch thread reference and colour.
  • ASCS code: the ABC Seams Code System reference that defines a seam, and its topstitch, once and unambiguously across vendors.
