Construction seams join two or more layers of fabric and give the garment its shape. They are the structural seams: the ones that hold the pieces together and define how a garment is built.
Finishes work on the edge of the fabric. Their job is to close and polish the fabric edge so it doesn’t fray and looks neat on the body, whether it’s a hemline, neckline, or cuff.
Detail seams add to the design rather than build it. They decorate the surface, shape the volume, or attach one element on top of another: topstitching, pleats, and patch seams all live here.
