Using Callouts for Effective Communication
Definition
According to the Oxford Language Dictionary, a callout (n) is “a statement drawing critical attention to someone’s unacceptable actions or behaviour.” However, in the apparel industry, the term “callout” refers to elements and details (instead of statements). Under that viewpoint, a “callout” is a magnified part or element of a product that highlights specific design details that need deeper explanation or attention.
In order to ensure the manufacturer fully understands your design, you should illustrate or magnify those particular details that must be explained due to their complexity.

Types of Callouts
Callouts can be made using images like graphics, sketches, illustrations, zoom-outs, and pictures, all in combination with some text if needed.
Callouts can be used for different purposes. When writing our tech pack, we must explain diverse features like placket constructions and label types.
Based on the element to explain, there are three types of callouts:
- Design details
- Constructions and finishes
- Trimmings (including labels)
Callouts Implementation
